St Mary Magdalen Churchyard
St Mary Magdalen Churchyard
Southwark Council has engaged Land Use Consultants to develop a master plan for the Churchyard. While it is a great open space for the local community and an important setting for the Grade II* listed St Mary Magdalen Church, over the years it has lacked the love and attention it deserves.
Combining Section 106 contributions and Cleaner Greener Safer funding has allowed us to upgrade the park and make it a place the community uses and enjoys more. Current funding will see a masterplan created for the whole park and the first phase of priority works carried out.
Masterplan design and phase one construction
Following your feedback throughout the consultation process, we have been able to finalise the masterplan for St Mary Magdalen Churchyard. After costing out all the work, the priorities for phase 1 delivery have been determined. Works are now programmed for late 2011 to coincide with planting season.

Stage two consultation
In 2009 we had displays at the Bermondsey Street Festival to get input on the masterplan layout and help determine what the priority works would be.
- Download the sketch masterplan layout and proposed character
- Download the path layout options - people generally supported a change in the path layout to address the desire line
- How would you spend the money? From the first round of consultation a number of issues and aspirations were identified. Items were voted on to gain an insight into people preferences for the first £100,000 of expenditure - this funding has been secured. See the expenditure sheet.
Comments received from public consultation at the Bermondsey Street Festival
The interest in the project is high reflecting local people's desire to see the site improved. We received many interesting and valued comments. Read what people at the festival had to say in the stage two consultation results. We are currently working with the designers to respond to the community's input and develop a design proposal.
Stage one consultation
We were really pleased with the number of people that participated in our consultation day on Monday July 20 2009. We also interviewed park users and received completed surveys from the community. The information you gave us was invaluable to move into the next stage of the project and develop a design option for discussion.

Fascinating history
St Mary Magdalen Churchyard has a fascinating history with many listed tombs and monuments, the St Mary Magdalen Grade II* listed church and the Scheduled Monument of the 10th Century Bermondsey Abbey along the southern boundary of the churchyard. The site is part of the Bermondsey conservation area.
