Due to a fire in Walworth Town Hall on Monday 25 March, the Walworth One Stop Shop, Cuming Museum and Newington Library are closed. Alternative locations are now available for many affected services.
Cathedral Square
Redesigning the square
It has been an aspiration of the council to make improvements to Cathedral Square since the success of the adjacent Montague Close scheme in 2005. Improvements to the square have been phased as funding has been secured. The first two phases are complete and involved:
- Lighting improvements, both base lighting and tree lighting.
- New seating and planting.
Phase 3: Redesigning the raised platform by the river
The final phase will create an inviting space and improve access to the river side for all users. By using similar high quality materials to Montague Close, the wider area will have a unified appearance. Concealed areas have been removed and improved site lines will allow better natural surveillance of the whole site.

Landscape architects Farrer Huxley have been appointed by the council to design and project manage the implementation of the scheme, which is currently in consultation. The final agreed design will be implemented spring to summer 2011.
Importance of the square
Cathedral Square is located near London Bridge on the river side opposite Southwark Cathedral. It is one of the few open spaces along the river walk offering a quiet location to sit, have lunch or watch activity on the river with an impressive city backdrop. Better Bankside regularly set out their popular pink chairs in the square, outdoor theatre productions are held in the summer months and the renowned Biennale hosts annual events. The square is of particular importance for helping reconnect visitors with the river as it sits on a stretch of the Thames Path that does not run directly adjacent to the river.
