Bankside lighting strategy
North Southwark's lighting improvements
The council has introduced better lighting for the Bankside area of north Southwark, bounded by the River Thames, Blackfriars Road, Union Street and Borough High Street.
Enchancement of the area after dark
The Bankside Lighting Strategy has achieved effective lighting throughout Bankside that's attractive and enhances the area after dark. The creation of a brilliant night scene with feature lighting makes the area more attractive to visitors and residents.
Improving the night time appearence has achieved a reduction in both the real and perceived levels of crime.
Project delivery
As part of the Section 106 agreement with developer Land Securities, £400,000 has been allocated towards lighting improvements within Bankside. The projects that have been delivered include
- Up lighting of Southwark Street Bridge fascias
- Redcross Way tunnel
- Park Street bridge (under Southwark Bridge Road)
- Cathedral Square tree lighting
- Tate to tube in Great Suffolk Street tunnel
- Improved lighting at Bankend
Clink Street Tunnel is to be carried out in 2010.
Bankside lighting strategy document
The initiative began in 2004. Southwark Council worked with developer, Land Securities, to commission a lighting strategy. The strategy was to complement lighting plans for Light at the End of the Tunnel strategy. Neighbouring Pool of London and the Cross River Partnership looked at transforming arches, tunnels and viaducts in Lambeth and Southwark into bright, safe passageways.
