Public realm improvements
St Mary's churchyard
Once a large churchyard, St Mary's has been transformed under the Elephant and Castle regeneration scheme into an extremely popular and well used park.
It has been completely relandscaped, providing playground facilities, plenty of seating for adults and planted areas for everyone to enjoy. The new main entrance reconnects the park to the city with an open plaza where local residents, commuters, students and passers-by can relax away from the busy pace of the area.
Newington Estate
Funded by the Strata scheme in addition to the two residential buildings, over £1m was spent on a programme of improvements to the local environment for the benefit of the community. These works included the refurbishment of a local playground and basketball court in the neighbouring Newington Estate, extensive new low level and tree planting and also upgrading of paving.
Pullens Estate
During summer 2011 three public realm improvement schemes are planned across the Pullens Estate. Predominantly funded by S106 from the recently completed Printworks scheme, these initiatives will include a new community orchard on Peacock St consisting of eight apple trees and a quince tree; a wider entrance on Ileffe Street entrance to Crampton School with an avenue of walnut trees, new seating and planting. On Crampton Street, there will be pear trees and a pine nut tree, community planting beds and seating. All of the new trees and planting will be edible.
The implementation of these three initiatives follows extensive consultation with the local community over the past two years led by the scheme architects DPQ.
Open spaces
The Green Links Framework for Elephant and Castle is a series of plans identifying the open spaces in and around the Elephant and Castle Opportunity Area, and outlines proposals for how the pedestrian and cyclist routes between them can be improved.
