Charles Dickens - A Southwark childhood
Tuesday 22 May to Saturday 24 November 2012
This family friendly exhibition celebrates 200 years since the birth of Charles Dickens, novelist and social reformer. It explores his experiences of the Borough area of Southwark during 1824 when his father was imprisoned for debt in the Marshalsea Prison.
The places, people and living conditions he experienced during his short time in the area provided inspiration for many characters and narratives in his later writing. The exhibition explores key locations, such as the Marshalsea Prison, St George the Martyr Church and Mint Street workhouse through objects, artworks and illustrations from Southwark's collections.
The exhibition is accompanied by a lively events programme for adults and families.
