Temporary exhibitions
Elephant in focus: home from home
22 November 2011 to 18 February 2012
The next temporary exhibition at the Cuming Museum will be 'Elephant in focus', a duo of photographic exhibitions exploring life at the Elephant and Castle.
Home from Home presents a snapshot of the Elephant and Castle at the beginning of the twenty-first century. From the heart of the shopping centre, to the spaces tucked beneath the railway arches, to the Heygate estate, Home from Home celebrates the rich diversity of the area, and unearths the stories and memories of those who have made the Elephant their home.
Eva Sajovic is a Slovenian born photographer, who looks to reveal personality and counter negative stereotypes through her work. She lives and works in London, and has been photographing people and places in and around Elephant and Castle since 2007.
Sarah Butler is a writer fascinated by our relationship with place. She has created texts to accompany Eva's images, through a process of conversation and observation.
Elephant in focus: economy
6 March to 21 April 2012
Each year the MA Photojournalism and Documentary Photography students from the London College of Communications work on a project documenting the Elephant and Castle.
They are recording and responding to the area as it undergoes the profound challenges of regeneration. They are given a simple theme and encouraged to find engaging ways of producing documentary photographs.
This exhibition emerged from students working on the twin themes of 'work' and 'economy'. Amongst a wide selection of photographs and approaches to documentary are images of shoppers and market traders, of the contents of fridges and the occupants of new apartment blocks, of retired pensioners and development sites.
