Cuming Museum gallery
The museum is housed in a fully accessible venue in the Old Walworth Town Hall at 151 Walworth Road, next door to the original old site in the Newington Library building.

Normal opening hours

The Cuming Museum is open Tuesdays to Saturdays, 10am to 5pm. It is closed on Sundays, Mondays and Bank Holidays.

How to get to the Cuming Museum

Rail and tube

  • Elephant and Castle underground station
  • Elephant and Castle rail station
  • Kennington underground station

Walking

We are five to ten minutes walk from the Elephant and Castle underground station:

  • Make sure you leave from the Northern Line exit (shopping centre exit)
  • Once outside, turn left and walk around the outside of the shopping centre, keeping it on your left
  • Walk under a railway bridge and you'll find yourself on the Walworth Road
  • Continue, heading straight across the main junction of Haygate Street. Pass a petrol station
  • The Cuming Museum is inside the Old Walworth Town Hall on the corner of Wansey Street
  • The museum is at the front of the building on the ground floor, through the main front entrance

There are bus stops immediately outside the building. We are the first stop after the Elephant and Castle shopping centre if you are heading towards Camberwell Green or Peckham.

Access information

The Cuming Museum is fully accessible to wheelchair users. The museum is located on the ground floor and there is ramp access from the One Stop Shop entrance on Wansey Street. There is a disabled toilet.

We also offer hearing loop facilities within the museum and education room, a basic audio guide and text in large print for the museum's two permanent exhibitions.

Large print is also available for temporary exhibitions. Text for the permanent exhibitions is also available  in six of Southwark's community languages:

  • Spanish
  • Bengali
  • Chinese
  • Somali
  • French
  • Vietnamese

Toilets

The museum provides public toilets, including a toilet for the disabled and baby change facilities. Please ask at the museum reception for mat and babywipes.

The museum shop

The shop sells a range of books and souvenirs including, local history books, publications and maps, greetings cards and postcards, Cuming Museum linen bags, small souvenirs for children such as toys, pencils, rubbers and rulers.
