Blue plaque for Sir Michael Caine

"This Blue Plaque means more to me than a star in the Hollywood walk of fame ever would. I've won a few awards in my time, but this really is the greatest - I would not have missed coming here today for the world," said Sir Michael Caine today (Wednesday October 1st) as he unveiled his very own Blue Plaque at the site of his birth, St Olave's Hospital in Rotherhithe.

"This is an award from my own people and I cannot tell you how much this means to me. It's incredible to come back to Southwark and see how great this place has become."

Sir Michael was welcomed to Southwark by Cllr Nick Stanton, Leader of Southwark Council at the ceremony which was attended by a crowd of press and delighted local fans. "We are delighted and proud to award Sir Michael with his Blue Plaque, voted for by the people of Southwark. He is one of our biggest cultural icons and demonstrates the pride we can take in our borough's cultural heritage. It was a fantastic event today - and Sir Michael seemed genuinely moved to receive the award."
