War memorials in Southwark
There are an estimated 70,000 war memorials throughout the UK in many differing forms; more than 300 of them are in Southwark. The memorials range from the frequently-seen community crosses or plaques to buildings, lych gates, gardens, hospitals, organs, chapels and windows.
The
UK National Inventory of War Memorials database has recently launched a UK wide database of these memorials commemorating all conflicts, not just those of the First and Second World War.
The
Imperial War Museum has a reading room, open Monday to Saturday 10am to 5pm. They can be contacted on 020 7416 5344. The reading room has a terminal that provides full information on individual war memorials.
