LGBT History Month 2011

LGBT History Month 2011

LGBT History Month events

Southwark's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community is one of the largest in London at just under 20,000 residents. The borough is also home to some of the nation's most iconic LGBT and human rights activists, including Peter Tatchell and Sue Sanders (co-founder of LGBT History Month).

LGBT History Month takes place every February, celebrating the lives and achievements of the LGBT community with the aim, say organisers, of "claiming our history, celebrating our present, creating our future". The month has been marked across the United Kingdom since 2005. This year's special theme is "tackling homophobia and transphobia in sport".

This years celebration of LGBT History Month 2011 was launched on Tuesday 1 February, with a special Queer Question Time, hosted by Evan Davis of BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

LGBT History Month continues until the end of February. Other highlights include a walking tour through Southwark's LGBT history with CoolTan Arts on Saturday 19 February, a live recording of Resonance 104.4FM's acclaimed LGBT magazine show at Southwark Playhouse on Monday 21 February, and Crossing Deep Waters :Celebrating the lives of African-American heroes and heroines at LSBU on Thursday 24 February.
