Design and access statements SPD

Design and access statements SPD

Design and access statements are a legal requirement for certain planning applications and conservation area consent applications. They ensure important information is addressed before a planning application is submitted and include the design process and how certain design issues are addressed, for example:

  • safety
  • security
  • accessibility
  • the relationship between buildings and their surroundings

The SPD provides guidance to developers and the wider community on how to prepare design and access statements for proposed developments in Southwark.

The design and access SPD was adopted by council executive on 11 September 2007 and is used by planning officers, councillors and members of the public to make decisions on planning applications and understand what to expect from a good design and access statement.

You can also view these documents at the town hall, libraries, area housing offices and one stop shops. Southwark residents and community groups can request a copy free from the planning policy team. For all other parties there is a £10 charge.
