Can a CPZ help?

How can a controlled parking zone help?

A controlled parking zone is an area where all parking is restricted to people who hold permits, vouchers or pay and display tickets. Parking bays will show where it is safe to park and yellow lines will indicate where it is not. Motorists will know when they have entered or left a controlled parking zone by the presence of signs around the boundary.

You can download a controlled parking zone information leaflet for further information. This leaflet provides a general introduction to controlled parking zones and gives examples of where it has helped Southwark residents and businesses.

How could a controlled parking zone help my street?

Everybody, whether a pedestrian, cyclist, motorist or those on buses, will notice the change associated with a controlled parking zone which can help in the following ways

  • More spaces, for local residents and businesses by preventing commuter and long stay parking
  • Prioritised parking for different types of motorists, eg residents, disabled visitors, goods delivery companies, motorcycles, businesses
  • Reduced congestion. Existing CPZs already reduce the number of vehicles driving into or passing through Southwark
  • Resident's visitors, providing greater opportunity to park close to their destination, especially useful for trades persons
  • Improved journey times for buses and greater reliability about your delivery slot
  • Road safety improved by designating where it is safe to park and where it is not
  • Cleaner air by deterring non essential car journeys, noise levels improve too
  • New developments reducing the impact on existing communities by preventing future occupiers from entitlement to a parking permit
  • Businesses, assisting those businesses who deliver services and goods by making available a business parking permit
  • Customer parking. More parking spaces by encouraging turn over of vehicles near to shops rather than the street being blocked all day
  • Improved public realm as less dominance of the street by cars
  • Sustainable travel, encouraging motorists to think about using an alternative to the car, walking or cycling may be quicker and easier
