Walworth
The population of the Walworth Community Council area was 38,396 in 2001 - it is expected to have risen to 40,393 in 2006. It has slightly more young people compared to the rest of Southwark. In fact, of all eight Southwark Community Councils, Walworth has the second highest percentage of residents aged 15 years or less.
More than half of Walworth residents are white - but the percentage of white residents is lower than the average for the rest of Southwark and is the third lowest proportion of all the community council areas. Approximately a third of residents are black (Caribbean, African and other black), with two percent Chinese, four percent Asian and just under four percent mixed. Black African is the largest of the ethnic minorities in the area at 22 percent.
There are more residents in Walworth who were born in the UK than there are in Camberwell, Borough and Bankside and Peckham. The majority of people in Walworth are Christian and of other religious groups, Muslim is the largest.
Health indicators for Walworth do not differ significantly from other community council areas in Southwark. The rate of unemployment in Walworth is eight percent which is higher than for Southwark, London and England. Of the Southwark Community Council areas, this is the second highest rate. It also has the third highest Job-Seekers Allowance claimant rate at six percent and the second highest rate of residents in receipt of Income Support at 13 percent.
