Peckham - the people

Arsenal Ladies defender Mary Phillip in action

Peckham - the people

Famous Peckham residents have included people from a variety of walks of life, from equal rights campaigner Dr Harold Moody to artists Tom Phillips and Anthony Gormley. Two sets of famous brothers, footballers Rio and Anton Ferdinand and musicians Matt and Luke Goss are SE15 boys. And of course, England and Arsenal defender Mary Phillip is from Peckham.

Today, around 25,000 people call Peckham home. In addition to the host community, our residents have come from all over the world. Peckham has the highest proportion of people born elsewhere compared to the rest of Southwark.

We have a big African population, with the Cote D'Ivoire, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Somalia well represented. We also have residents from many other areas including the Caribbean, Eastern Europe, Vietnam, Turkey and the Balkans.

Not surprisingly we follow a mix of religions and no religion. Around two-thirds of us are Christian, ten per cent of us are Muslim, two per cent are Buddhist and one per cent are Hindu.

Peckham has a young population compared to Southwark as a whole and has the highest proportion of under 15s in the borough. It has the lowest proportion of working aged residents, 16 to 64, and the lowest proportion of older residents aged 65 and over.
