Borough and Bankside - the people

Borough and Bankside

Today, Borough and Bankside is home to nearly 30,000 people. It has the highest proportion of people of working age in the borough and the lowest proportion of young people aged 15 and under compared to other parts of Southwark.

Around 60 per cent of people in Borough and Bankside were born in England, this is the second lowest of all Southwark's community council areas. And Borough and Bankside has the highest proportion of residents born in other EU countries. This may well have risen further since the enlargement of the EU to include countries such as Poland.

The area has a higher proportion of people in work and fewer claimants than most other community council areas in Southwark.

It has the second healthiest population in the borough and also the fewest unpaid carers.

Some 45 per cent of the residents of Borough and Bankside are in council properties and 20 per cent in housing association homes. This is the highest compared with other community council areas in Southwark.
