Bermondsey - the people

Bermondsey

As at Census 2001, the population of Bermondsey was 35,611. By 2006 this population was expected to increase by 8.5 per cent to 38,644. This is higher than the expected overall population increase for Southwark (6 per cent).

Bermondsey has a higher proportion of males aged 30 to 59 compared to females and a higher proportion of females aged 65 and over compared to males. Bermondsey has a high proportion of people aged over 16 compared to all the other community councils. Just over 70 per cent of people in Bermondsey are White British. Slightly under one-fifth of people are Black.

The proportion of White British people in Bermondsey is higher than for Southwark as a whole and the proportion of people from Black and minority ethnic communities is lower than for Southwark as a whole.

This is also evident in comparison to the other community council areas, where Bermondsey has a higher proportion of White British people and lower proportion of people from Black and minority ethnic communities.

Bermondsey's occupations are mostly managers and senior officials followed by associate professional and technical occupations, but it also has a higher than average proportion of people in elementary occupations.
