Licensing Act 2003 and the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games

The London 2012 Olympic Games take place between 27 July and 12 August 2012 and the Paralympic Games from 29 August to 11 September 2012.

Licensees are asked to note that, currently, there is no indication of any general relaxation of licensed hours, for either alcohol or regulated entertainment, for the London 2012 Games period. If this remains the case any request for extended licensed hours or variation of licence conditions must be made through the normal licensing process

Given this, we would ask licensees to make any necessary application as early as possible, especially if you have any 'extraordinary' event or proposal in mind. Early application helps both yourself and our services plan ahead with certainty. Please bear in mind that the emergency services and other infrastructure providers (e.g. security companies; sanitary facilities and crash barrier providers) will be subject to considerable demands over the London 2012 Games period. The capacity of these services to support your event will be taken into account when considering applications.

Please also note that any 'significant event' taking place during the period known as 'Games Time Plus' (from 15 July to 16 September 2012) must also be considered by the Southwark Amalgamated Safety Advisory Group (ASAG). A 'significant event' is defined as any event:

  • Requiring a licence or traffic regulation order
  • Attracting a capacity of 500 people or over
  • Taking place near an Olympic or Paralympic venue or road event
  • Requiring resource consideration by the police; fire brigade; transport and British transport police; NHS London; London ambulance service; and Port of London Authority

If your event falls within the definition of a 'significant event' please contact the licensing service to discuss arrangements for presenting your application to the group.
