Cycle parking and security
Cycle parking and security
Secure cycle parking at all new developments is key to raise the cycling levels in the borough.
Cycle parking stands
We have completed an audit of all cycle parking stands in the borough.
View the audit and photographs of parking locations and facilities on our interactive webmap.
Since 2004, Southwark has been consistent in its approach of installing cycle stands throughout the borough. We use black Sheffield stands (an upturned 'U'), with a florescent tapping bar to help the visually impaired. Funds for an ongoing programme of stand installation is being sought through the planning system and we hope that all new developments in the borough will include a minimum of 10% cycle parking provision for visitors, which will normally be on street and available for anyone to use, not just visitors to the development.
Bike security
We are also working with the Metropolitan Police in Southwark to evaluate a bike coding scheme initiated by the City of London Police in an attempt to reduce the number of bike thefts throughout the borough. We also intend to place stickers on all bike racks in the borough advising on proper security. Furthermore, if you see any information on cycling events in your area, please come along as the Metropolitan Police will also be there to give further detailed advice on securing your bikes.
Secure cycle parking provision on housing estates
As part of the Mayor for London's Barclays Cycle Superhighway initiative, London Borough of Southwark was awarded funding to supply some of their housing estates (within 1.5km of Barclays Cycle Superhighway), with secure cycle parking facilities.
Southwark Council recently contacted all residents of their housing estates (within 1.5km of Barclays Cycle Superhighway), to ascertain whether secure cycle parking facilities were wanted on their estates. We had a larger than expected response rate, with a high number of residents requesting that cycle parking be implemented.
As such, we are now looking to put varying types of cycle parking provision on those estates which required the highest amount of parking. Given that all the estates differ in one form or another, be it lack of space, areas that could be converted or upgrading of old pram sheds, care is being taken to provide secure cycle parking facilities which would work best with each estate and the residents requirements.
Since the launch of the above initiative, further funding has been secured to provide secure cycle parking on housing estates within the rest of Southwark. As such, if you believe that your estate would benefit from the provision of cycle parking facilities, then please get in touch.
