Cycle to school
Pupil cycle training
Ensuring that pupils are safe on the roads is of paramount importance. Southwark council funds cycle training sessions that schools are able to book directly.
Staff cycling
Southwark Council operates a bike loan scheme for staff that currently drive to school but are interested in trying cycling. A bike, helmet, lock, lights and panniers are available for a loan for the duration of a school term. In return staff commit to cycle to and from school an average of twice a week over the term. This gives staff the chance to see if switching to cycle travel suits them before having to buy their own bike and equipment.
For staff wishing to purchase their own bikes, schools can support them by setting up a cycle to work scheme. This government backed salary sacrifice scheme allows employees to purchase bikes and accessories through their employer. It greatly reduces the cost of a new bike, by up to 50% in some cases.
If you work in a school and are interested in one of these cycling initiatives please contact the transport planning team for more details.
