Camberwell Town Centre revitalisation scheme
Project overview
Together with Transport for London and the London Borough of Lambeth, we will be spending £7 million to improve your town centre in Camberwell.
The focus of the project is the area around the town centre, defined as the point where Camberwell New Road, Camberwell Road, Peckham Road and Denmark Hill meet. In order to achieve a real transformation however, we have to broaden the limits of the scheme area slightly.
These improvements will include alterations to the highways and enhanced public spaces, it will bring renewed focus to the business and retail sector and address concerns relating to crime.
How are we going to do it?
We have identified five principle initiatives to focus on in order to achieve the project's objectives:
- Improve how the bus network functions around the town centre. This will include reviewing the location of bus stands, operating procedures and services patterns, in conjunction with TfL Buses
- Improving pedestrian facilities in order to provide a focus to the town centre. Specifically this includes pedestrian access to Camberwell Green and providing links to key community facilities such as Camberwell Baths, Kings College Hospital, Magistrates Court and the new library
- Introduce 'gateway(s)' to Camberwell town centre, for example, lighting improvements on the railway bridge or a gateway feature at junction of Denmark Hill and Coldharbour Lane
- Enlivening and improving the dead spaces around the town centre, particularly Artichoke Place and reviewing the operation of Orpheus Street, Wren Street and Daneville Road
- Improve and unify the streetscapes around the town centre. Along with our own highways, some of the roads around the town centre are the responsibility of the London Borough of Lambeth and Transport for London. We will work to provide consistency of street materials and palate across the three networks
