Sustainable modes of travel
Sustainable modes of travel strategy
The sustainable modes of travel (SMoT) strategy sets out how we aim to help children and young people, including those with special educational needs, to use sustainable modes of transport safely and easily.
The strategy has been prepared by the council's transport planning and children's services teams and looks at current pattens of travel and barriers and sets out ways to improve sustainable travel.
Based on the findings contained in the SMoT, a number of key objectives have been identified. These objectives will provide a focus for interventions by the council and its partners to deliver and promote a better environment for sustainable travel. The objectives are:
- Support and contribute to the health and wellbeing of children and young people, particularly the most vulnerable
- Facilitate parents, carers and guardians to establish a safe and appropriate journey to, from and between schools, settings and extended services using sustainable modes of transport
- Ensure that the views of children, young people and their parents/carers are listened to and acted on, in making improvements to infrastructure that meets their needs
- Develop, implement and monitor travel plans in all schools and further education institutions
