Community led projects
Community led street improvement projects
These are small scale projects where the local residents help to re-design their own street. The process involves meetings and street walkabouts with residents to identify any issues followed by workshops and street parties to come up with and publicise a design for the street. These projects aim to resolve particular traffic issues, bring local people together and build stronger communities and links with the council.
The methodology for these projects is based on the DIY Streets project by Sustrans. Sustrans trialled 11 streets throughout the country with the DIY Street project between 2007 and 2010.
More information on this can be found on the Sustrans website.
We are currently trialling this type of project on Staffordshire Street in Peckham and, if successful, hope to expand the scheme to other streets in the borough.
Staffordshire Street was chosen in response to emails and letters received regarding traffic speeds, links with the Low Carbon Zone project and the eagerness of local residents to be involved.
