Small repairs scheme

The small repairs scheme is for homeowners who are aged over 60 or have a permanent disability, who wish to carry out one-off repairs to their home.

What repairs can be done?

  • Gutter clearing
  • Minor repairs to roofs
  • Electrical work
  • Plumbing 
  • Repairs to heating systems and boilers
  • Plastering
  • Carpentry
  • Leaking downpipes.

Will I have to pay for this service?

Yes, there will be a small charge for this service, apart from the home assessment checks.

Handyperson scheme

The handyperson scheme provides help with household maintenance and repairs for home owners, tenants and leaseholders who are aged over 60 or have a perminant disability.

The Handyperson scheme is unable to assist tenants where the required work is the responsibility of the landlord. 

What work can I get done?

The handyperson scheme covers minor repairs such as:

  • Moving furniture
  • Hanging or taking down curtains
  • Taping down carpets and electrical leads
  • Changing light bulbs
  • Putting up shelves
  • Re-glazing small windows
  • Fixing minor plumbing and electrical faults
  • Bleeding radiators
  • Fitting draught excluders. 

The handyperson scheme does not cover:

  • Gas servicing
  • Major building work
  • Decorating
  • Gardening.

Will I have to pay for this service?

For some services, such as home safety assessments, there is no charge.

For most work carried out by a Handyperson there is a charge for labour and materials:

Materials

You will need to pay for the materials that the work requires. The Handyperson can purchase the materials for you, but the time spent shopping will be included included in the total cost of the job.

Labour costs

If you are receiving a means tested benefit or are disabled, you will need to pay £10 per hour.

If you do not have a disabled or receive a means tested benefit, you will need to pay £20 per hour.
