Getting to South Dock Marina by river

South Dock Marina is situated on the south bank of the river Thames in Limehouse Reach, about a mile upstream from Greenwich and about two miles downstream from Tower Bridge.

Arriving from seaward

When coming upstream, pass through the Thames Barrier in Woolwich Reach and around the Millennium Dome on Blackwall Point. The historic buildings of Greenwich and the Cutty Sark clipper will appear on your port side. Passing the entrance to Deptford Creek on your port, you will see Masthouse Terrace Pier to starboard and Convoys Wharf to port (RO-RO jetty no longer used by big ships).

At this point call the Marina on channel M1 (37) to be advised of the depth over the cill and to allow time for the lock to be prepared.

Half a mile further on, look for Greenland Pier to port. Large, fast riverbus catamarans run to this pier. The lock entrance to South Dock Marina is inside and immediately downstream of Greenland Pier.

Arriving from upstream

Rounding the Rotherhithe peninsula, you'll see Canary Wharf and the other towers of the Isle of Dogs financial district on your port side.

At this point, call the Marina on channel M1 (37) to be advised of the depth over the cill and to allow time for the lock to be prepared.

On your starboard side, you'll see a pier at the Holiday Inn. Look out for the next pier to starboard, Greenland Pier. Large, fast riverbus catamarans run to this pier. The lock entrance to South Dock Marina is inside and immediately downstream of Greenland Pier.

Locking in

A glass-fronted lock office stands immediately above the lock. Be aware of strong cross tides until you are inside the knuckles. The lock widens out inside the gates and there are hanging grab lines on both sides of the lock. If you come to starboard (lock office side), staff may be able to pass lines down to you.

Please consult the Port of London's The following link opens in a new windowtide tables and The following link opens in a new windowlive tide reports before locking in. If there isn't enough water over the cill, you can moor up on the inside of Greenland Pier with access ashore via the pier. The outside of Greenland Pier is used by commercial craft so please don't moor here. Be advised that there is considerable danger from the wash of passing craft. Your vessel should be very well fendered and not left unattended.
