Renting privately

For those who don't qualify for council accomodation the private sector is the only alternative.

Almost all landlords will expect you to find a deposit or rent in advance. In some cases the council can help. If we can't, you may be able to get a loan from the Job Centre to help with some of the costs, even if you're not on benefits.

There is a private organisation which may be able to help you get into a private sector home:

  • Hope Worldwide - Two Step: You can apply directly yourself to this project from anywhere in London. The scheme has links with some landlords and negotiates deposits.  It prefers you to pay at least part of the deposit yourself.  Their contact number is 020 7713 7655. If you're working, you may want to consider some of the government's low cost housing schemes for workers.
  • First Steps are service where you can rent, buy or rent to buy. Further details can be found at by ringing 0844 406 9997.
