Musical instrument tuition and provision
Musical instrument tuition and provision
Applying for tuition
Musical instrument tuition is offered to Southwark pupils through two Saturday centres for children in school years three to six and the Central London Centre of Young Musicians (CYM) for children over 11 years.
Pupils are expected to commit to attending the music centre regularly on Saturdays during term time, and to doing some additional practice. No special expertise or experience is required for the Saturday centres, but auditions are held for Central CYM places.
Types of instrument
Tuition is available in brass, guitar, keyboard, percussion, piano, singing, strings and woodwind, and includes individual tuition as well as participation in ensembles, bands, orchestras and choirs.
To apply for tuition you can either
- Visit the web site: southwarkmusicservice.org.uk
- Contact your child's school directly
- Download our information pack and application form
Purchasing or loaning an instrument
An instrument may be loaned to pupils receiving tuition at the centres, although they are not allowed to take it home immediately.
Pupils receiving tuition can purchase new instruments without paying 17.5 percent in VAT through their school.
The pupil or parent selects an instrument and pays the school the discounted amount. The school will then pay the full cost, reclaim the discount, and pass the instrument on to the pupil.
For other ways to get involved in music and to find out more about financial assistance schemes you can visit the Directgov website.
