Equality duty for the public sector
The Equality Act 2010 forms the basis of UK anti-discrimination law.
It identifies nine characteristics where the government feels that discrimination or unfair treatment could arise.
These are: age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion and belief, gender and sexual orientation.
Under the the Equality Act 2010 Southwark Council has the duty to:

Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation and otherconduct prohibited by the Act

Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not

Foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not

Publish information to demonstrate our compliance with the Equality Duty. This includes information relating to our employees and others affected by our policies and practices (such as service users)

Publish equality objectives every four years
