The Equality Act 2010

Equality duty for the public sector

The Equality Act 2010 forms the basis of UK anti-discrimination law.

It identifies nine characteristics where the government feels that discrimination or unfair treatment could arise.

These are: age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion and belief, gender and sexual orientation.

Under the the Equality Act 2010 Southwark Council has the duty to:

  • Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation and otherconduct prohibited by the Act
  • Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not
  • Foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not
  • Publish information to demonstrate our compliance with the Equality Duty. This includes information relating to our employees and others affected by our policies and practices (such as service users)
  • Publish equality objectives every four years
