Appeals
You can make an appeal against the following:
- That you are liable for council tax if you believe someone else should be liable.
- The award of a council tax discount, exemption or disabled relief.
- The amount of council tax benefit or second adult rebate.
- The issue of a penalty notice.
To make an appeal your must complete the appeal form with your reasons clearly stated. You must still continue to pay in line with your current council tax bill until we advise you otherwise.
If you are not satisfied with our decision you can make a further appeal to the Valuation Tribunal. However, if your appeal is granted you will then be issued with a further bill and new payment instructions. This will take account of any payments you have already made.
Please note that all banding appeals must be made to the Valuation Office Agency and not to Southwark Council.
Penalty notices
A minimum penalty notice for £70 can be issued if:
- We have requested information on the liable person and you have failed to provide it.
- You have knowingly provided inaccurate information.
- You have failed to notify us that a property is not or no longer under exemption from council tax.
- You have failed to notify us that the council tax discount was incorrect or should not have applied.
If you have received a penalty notice that you wish to appeal please do so within 14 days by emailing counciltax@southwark.gov.uk. You do not need to pay the penalty whilst waiting for our response.
