Your responsibilities

As a council tenant, you have signed a tenancy agreement with us as your landlord. This is a legal agreement, which both parties must keep to, and places important responsibilities on both of us. This page tells you about your rights and responsibilities as a council tenant.

The contents of this section of the tenants' handbook is legally binding for the council.

  • You must keep to the rules of your tenancy agreement. You risk losing your home if you, or anyone else, break them
  • You must pay your rent and other charges on time
  • You must be a good neighbour
  • You must look after your home
  • You must allow access for a gas safety check every year
