Secure and introductory tenancies

Secure Tenancies

Most council tenants are secure tenants and are protected by the Housing Act 1985. This means that as long as your council home is your only and main home, we cannot make you leave without a court order.

No one under 18 can have a council tenancy. Instead, we will give them a licence to live in the property until they are 18. There are important legal differences between a council tenancy and a licence to occupy, so if you are under 18, make sure that you contact your area housing office for advice.
