Council tax benefit
This will help you pay your council tax. It is based on:
- The amount of council tax that you have to pay
- The income and savings for you and those living in your household
- Your personal circumstances and those living in your household
It is paid by your local council and will be credited directly to your council tax account. Find out if you are eligible to receive benefits.
Second adult rebate
This will help you pay your council tax. It is based on:
- The amount of council tax that you have to pay
- The income and savings of the 'second adults' in your household
It is not based upon your income and savings. It is paid by your local council and will be credited directly to your council tax account.
If you qualify for both council tax benefit and second adult rebate you will receive whichever is higher. Find out if you are eligible to receive benefits.
Housing benefit
This is paid by the council. It is based upon the level of rent, income, savings your personal circumstances and those living in your household. If you live in privately rented accommodation your housing benefit is also based on the size of the property you need. It will not help you pay your mortgage.
It can be claimed whether you pay your rent to the council, a housing association or a private landlord. You can also claim if you are a lodger, joint tenant or live in a hostel. Find out if you are eligible to receive benefits.
