Fitness for women and girls

The Women and Girls Get Active Sports programme started  in the summer of 2009 to successfully engage the women and girls in Southwark in sport and physical activity. Initially the programme offered a week of free activities to help promote existing activities offered by Southwark Council and its partners. Activities included tennis, boxing, multi-sports and netball.

The programme was very successful with many of the girls going on to participate in the programme's exit routes. Due to the popularity and demand of some sports, some clubs have now set up additional women only sessions to cater for the demand

Training - want to get involved?

The programme also provides women with the opportunity to access a coach education courses. In partnership with Sports Leaders, Lambeth and Southwark Sport Action Zone and the Aylesbury New Deals for Communities programme we delivered a 'Women Get Set Go' course during the October half term holidays with 15 girls successfully passing. Most of the young girls will continue to be involved in sport, participating or volunteering and will be given the opportunity to participate in further coaching courses provided by the Women and Girls Get Active network. This site will provide updates on future courses as and when they become available.

How do I get more involved in sport?

The Women and Girls Get Active programme is a partnership of organisations, who provide a variety of physical activity and sports sessions for women and girls across Southwark. To see a list of the partners involved and their existing activities within the borough please download the Women and Girls Get Active activity timetable.
