Walks Programme

Want to volunteer as a walk leader?

Southwark Council and the PCT regularly run free training days for new volunteer walk leaders. The course is for anyone who would like to join our team of volunteer walk leaders or would like to introduce a walking programme into their organisation or community.

The aim of the course is to train walk leaders who can lead safe and enjoyable walking sessions as well as motivating people to walk more in their daily lives.

After the course you will be able to:

  • Outline main benefits of regular walking
  • Organise and lead a walking session
  • Outline the role of a walk leader at the start, during and at the end of the 'health walk'
  • Recognise potential safety hazards
  • Advise on practical issues such as intensity, frequency, posture and clothing
  • Outline the essential qualities of a 'good walk leader'
  • Describe the National Step-o-meter programme

Those attending the training should be committed to leading or assisting another walk leader with a walk soon after attending the course.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer walk leader then please contact Lorraine Baker 020 7525 1696.
