You can check whether a property is a council or privately owned home by using our ILATCH tenancy checker. It’s free and easy to use, even on your smartphone.
How to use ILATCH
- log onto ILATCH
- enter a postcode and select a property
- see if the property is a council or privately owned home
Access for estate agents
If you’re an estate agent, you may be breaking the law by helping a council tenant sublet their property and may be prosecuted under:
- Accommodation Agencies Act 1953 – which carries a three months imprisonment or a £1,000 fine (or both)
- Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 – which carries up to two years imprisonment and a fine (or both).
Our ILATCH tenancy checker will quickly confirm whether an address is a council or leaseholder property.
