Social Homebuy scheme

Who can apply

In order to qualify for the Social Homebuy scheme, you must meet the following criteria:

  • a council tenant for a minimum of 3 years
  • the property is your main and only principle home
  • you’re not receiving housing benefits or a full council tax discount
  • there's no future plans to demolish the property
  • you’re not in rent arrears
  • you’re not being made bankrupt
Right to Buy applicants can apply to convert their application to Social Homebuy, as long as they do so within 12 weeks of receiving the Right to Buy offer

If you would like to vacate your council property and purchase a property on the open market, you can explore the Home Purchase Grant

There are no fees in applying for social homebuy with the council. However, just like buying any property, there are a number of one-off costs you will need to pay for when purchasing your home. These include but not limited to: your own solicitor fees, bank transfer fees, VAT, land registry charges, mortgage fee & valuation and stamp duty (if applicable).
