Public sector equality duty

Carers

The Equality Act 2010 protects those caring for someone who is older or disabled from discrimination or harassment:

  • at work
  • when shopping or receiving services
  • when using facilities like public transport

Southwark Council is committed to promoting equality, irrespective of peoples caring responsibilities, and valuing the contribution made by all citizens.

Examples of how we're working to promote equality

The economic value of carers' unpaid services across the UK was estimated at £119bn in 2011, more than the annual cost of all aspects of the NHS. Southwark Council offers a range of support and advice for carers and those they care for through its adult social care services.
