Members' code of conduct

The Localism Act 2011 made fundamental changes to the system of regulation of standards of conduct for elected and co-opted councillors. The council adopted a new local code and new arrangements for the monitoring and enforcement of the code on 4 July 2012.

The council has a duty to promote and maintain high standards of conduct.

The council's code of conduct (pdf, 35kb) must, as a whole, be consistent with the following seven Nolan principles:

  1. selflessness
  2. integrity
  3. objectivity
  4. accountability
  5. openness
  6. honesty
  7. leadership

Members' code of conduct

If you believe that a councillor of Southwark Council has breached the code of conduct, complain to the monitoring officer by completing the breach of the member code of conduct complaint form (pdf, 136kb).

The arrangements for dealing with complaints can be found in the arrangements for dealing with standards allegations (pdf, 149kb).
