Illegal vapes seized

655 disposable vaping products containing nicotine were seized from six retailers in Walworth and Peckham. The products did not comply with tank size safety limits, labelling and product traceability requirements. This brings the total number of vapes seized in 2023 to some 5,800 from 44 premises.

Illicit tobacco, dangerous toys and counterfeit goods seized

Some 1,578 packs of illicit cigarettes and 2.6kg of illicit shisha packs were seized from a retail premise in SE1. The concealed haul was found during an inspection with sniffer dogs trained to detect tobacco products.

In separate inspections at mobile phone accessory shops in Peckham and Walworth some 450 chargers, batteries and covers were seized because they were believed to be counterfeit. A small number of toys were also seized from a market stall as they were not labelled with safety and traceability information.

Confiscation order issued

A DVD seller convicted and jailed for fraud, money laundering and counterfeiting offences was ordered to pay a confiscation order of £216,418. The confiscation hearing at the Inner London Crown Court last month was one of the biggest Proceeds of Crime Act cases brought by the council. Failure to pay back the sum will result in more prison time for the defendant who had used multiple alias accounts to sell fake DVDs online.
