Temporary traffic order

If a road needs to be closed for road works or development works, a temporary traffic order must be processed under Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.

If emergency works are being carried out using a road closure, a temporary traffic order must be processed under Section 14(2) of the same act.

Applying for a licence

You must apply for a temporary traffic order 12 weeks before the works begin. This will enable coordination and processing of the road closure or restriction. Payment must be made before a planned traffic order is issued. An invoice will be sent to you for payment.

To apply for a temporary traffic order, download an application form (PDF, 241kb). We advise you to read the guidance notes attached to the form before applying.

If you need to apply for an emergency traffic order road closure, download and complete this application form (PDF, 284kb).
