Funeral expenses and charges

Funerals can be both expensive and unexpected, but help is available to those who may find it difficult to cover the funeral costs.

Cemeteries and crematorium costs

If you're employing a funeral director, the charges listed here may be included in their bill

Help with the cost of a funeral

If you're arranging the funeral yourself and receive one of the following benefits, you may qualify for help from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP):

  • Council Tax
  • Disability Working Allowance
  • Family Credit
  • Housing Benefit
  • Income Support

To find out more, see the funeral payments page on the GOV.UK website.

You can also get advice from your local Jobcentre Plus. They can arrange an interview for you or they can send you the claim form SF200 to assist with funeral payments.

Information about municipal funerals arranged by our Social Services can be found on our arranging a cremation page.
