Walk to School CampaignThe walk to school campaign asks parents, pupils and teachers to think about their journey to and from school and the many benefits of making it on foot.
Over 50 per cent of children don't walk to school regularly and more pupils are being driven to school by car. This means less exercise, increased childhood obesity, bigger traffic jams and even more air pollution.
What do we do
The council organises several events each year including
National walk to school week (May)
If you would like to take part in these events please contact us using the details below. We can provide advice and guidance on how to run your events, run assemblies at your school to promote walking, and provide you with merchandise.
Walking to school should be an everyday activity so we also run the national WoW (Walk Once a Week) scheme, which rewards pupils with a collectible enamel badge if they walk to school regularly. The theme for 2008-09 is UK Landmarks.
Walk Once a Week (WoW)
WoW is a simple scheme that reduces the number of children driven to school and increases physical activity for those involved. WoW encourages parents, pupils and teachers to walk to school at least once a week and was developed to promote walking on a regular basis throughout the school year.
Schools pledge to become a WoW school and agree to promote walking as the preferred travel choice.
Walk every Wednesday
With this scheme, walking to school is promoted for each Wednesday of the school year. At the end of the month, pupils who have walked to school every Wednesday receive a reward. WoW schools receive a plaque at the end of the year to recognise their commitment.
We are able to give you all the help and advice you need to become involved. To find out more about the walk to school campaign and for information on school travel plans please contact us.
