Schedule of Works Advance Notice

Delays expected on the Walworth Road

Walworth road

Please note that we will be using two way temporary traffic lights from October 22 until November 30 2007.

There will be single lane traffic heading in both directions on the Walworth Road between Sutherland Walk and Gateway to enable the contractors to carry out the remaining of the footway works, the flush island in the carriageway and the bus pre-signal. These works are expected to last six weeks. Once they are finished we will be resurfacing the road between East Street and Gateway.

The two way lights will be operational all day every day for the duration of the above works.

Night closures on the Walworth Road

Please note that the Walworth Road will be closed weather permitted from 8pm to 5am on
December 3, 4, 5, and 6 to resurface the carriageway.
These dates are weather dependant and subject to change. If we cannot work on any of the nights, we will need to close the road for an additional nights.

Drivers are advised to seek alternative routes.

Bus route diversions

London bus routes will be diverted as follows

  • 35, 68, 148, 171, 343, N35, N68, N89 and N171 will be diverted via Heygate Street, Thurlow Street and Albany Road
  • 12, 40, 45 and 468 will be diverted via Newington butts, Kennington Park Road, Brixton Road and Camberwell New Road

We apologise in advance for any inconvenience this may cause.

The completed transformation of Walworth Road will bring benefits to all its users including safer crossings and streets, improved lighting, more trees, wider pavements and a better environment for shopping.

Works update so far

Phase one is nearing completion. The Browning Street / Manor Place junction will be operational from July 23 2007. Once Transport for London have installed the traffic signal posts and heads at East Street junction with Walworth Road and the junction is operational, the old signals at the post office will be removed.

A bit more work is needed to get the pedestrian crossing outside the library in operation. Once the antiskid is laid, phase one from Wansey Street to East Street will be complete.

Benches and bins still need to be installed, and we are awaiting for the piggy back lanterns, and the removal of the old lamp columns.
