Project UpdateLatest developments
On December 15 2006, Southwark Council received the Walworth Road Project scheme approval from transport for London's Network Assurance Team. On January 12 2007, we received the works approval from Transport for London for the section of Walworth Road between Wansey Street and East Street for a start of works on January 15 2007. Details of the planning of the works for this first section can be found in the Walworth Project December 2006 newsletter (1.22mb).

From the beginning of the project
The Walworth Project has commissioned a number of consultation exercises with people who live near and work on Walworth Road to establish a way forward for the project. These revealed that local people were concerned about narrow footways, too much traffic, the speed of traffic, difficulties in cleaning the street, and crowded bus stops.
Our consultants, Project Centre Ltd, recommended that we think about removing some or all of the bus lanes in Walworth Road as a way of sharing the road space between types of vehicles. You can download Project Centre's recommendations below.

Trial run
Transport for London (TfL) asked for this proposal to be tested by a computer model and between July and December 2004 a model was created and agreed. After that, Project Centre tested two options
- Removing all bus lanes between Heygate St and Albany Road
- Removing the bus lanes between Browning St and Liverpool Grove
The results of these tests were presented to TfL in January 2005 and they asked the council to carry out further modelling scenarios to test the impact of the scheme on issues such as parking enforcement.
The removal of bus lanes is a potentially sensitive issue and so Transport for London required the proposals to be considered by its Network Management Group (NMG). After the proposals were presented in April 2005, NMG identified some concerns and requested further remodelling work. NMG also decided that each TfL business unit should provide individual feedback on its areas of concern. This feedback was received from TfL in June 2005. As a result of these consultations and feedback, a revised traffic model was completed and submitted to TfL in July 2005.
This was approved in principal at TfL's NMG meeting in October 2005. The illustrated map inside the January 2006 edition of the Walworth Project newsletter (882 kb) shows the changes that have been approved as a result of this extensive consultation process.
On January 4 2006, short presentations from the two shortlisted designers were made at the Walworth Community Council that saw the launch of the public vote and the Walworth Project January newsletter (882 kb).
We asked the public to vote between the two shortlisted designs from Project Centre Ltd and Mouchel Parkman. The response was great. The winning design comes from the urban design team at Project Centre with 77% of the votes. More details can be found in the Walworth Project March 2006 newsletter (1.17mb).
