Southwark was one of ten local authorities to receive this money as part of a road safety initiative called Mixed Priority Route Road Safety Demonstration Projects. The project also ties in with Transport 2000’s Revitalising Communities on Main Roads campaign.
The aim of the project is to reduce road collisions that result in personal injuries in line with national and regional government targets. This was because a relatively high number of road casualties (250 over three years) happened on Walworth Road.
The project affects Walworth Road from Heygate Street to Albany Road. The road is classified as an "A" road and is part of the London bus priority network. It is also a thriving shopping area. More than 20,000 vehicles a day, and up to 80 buses an hour, travel along Walworth Road.
The grant has funded a three-year programme of improvements that began with consultation activities to find out what changes people who use Walworth Road would like to see. A launch newsletter about the Walworth Project asked local people what they wanted to see from the project. To view this document, you will need Adobe Acrobat installed on your computer. The project is led by a project board, which directs several specialised teams. The project board is made up of the executive member for transport and environment, councillors from the three affected wards, council officers, representatives from funding agencies and several community representatives.
The physical scope of the project includes all public realm infrastructure, including roads, footpaths, streetlights, guard rails, traffic signals, directional signage, seats, rubbish bins, cycle stands, planting and any other relevant infrastructure within the road reserve. The project will include quality design features to give the area a clearer identity, reduce the severance effect of the road, improve personal safety and security, and provide improved urban liveability. It is intended that lighting will be enhanced to improve road safety, personal security and encourage nighttime travel.
