Travel Planning Tools and Techniques

In order to deliver travel plans that work, Local Travel Plan Groups (LTPGs) need to have access to appropriate tools and techniques for travel planning. Some general information about why businesses should produce travel plans, and how they can go about it is provided on the Green Travel Plans page.

Recommended travel planning methodology

The travel planning methodology that is recommended for LTPGs is summarised in the diagram below.

What does a completed travel plan look like?

The completed travel plan is likely to include

  • recommendations for increasing people’s awareness about the impacts of the travel choices that they make, to influence modal shift
  • suggested areas where investment in infrastructure and public transport provision could result in significant gains.

Tools to influence people's thinking on travel

There are a variety of tools that can be used to influence the way people think about travel, and the choices that they make.
