How to green your business

Cycling and Walking

  • Provide secure (covered) bike parking - cycle stands or lockers
  • Provide changing facilities, showers and clothes lockers
  • Identify and publicise suitable routes for cycling to work and investigate the creation of cycle lanes
  • Offer interest free loans for cycle purchase
  • Negotiate staff discount at a local cycle shop
  • Set up a Bicycle Users Group (BUG), who can offer support and advice
  • Operate a Pool Bike scheme for business/leisure use
  • Provide reasonable cycle mileage allowances
  • Consider allowing staff to wear 'comfortable clothes' for cycling or walking into the office
  • Ensure footpaths are well lit, maintained and signposted

    Efficient car use

    • Set up a car sharing scheme
    • Pool cars or bikes for those who need a car during the day for work
    • Parking management - encourage more efficient use of spaces, parking control, reserve a section for car sharers, allocate permits according to need and distance from work, implement parking charges to fund other measures

    Flexible Working

    • Consider introducing flexitime - benefits to staff and company. This may involve, for example, allowing an earlier start or later finish, and can help to spread the traffic peak.
    • Encourage home working where possible, eg once a fortnight
    • Use video-conferencing to replace certain meetings
    • Consider operating a nine-day fortnight.

    Public transport

    • Provide interest free loans for season tickets
    • Negotiate staff discounts
    • Make season tickets available at work
    • Work with rail/bus operators to provide extra services where applicable
    • Ensure that timetables are readily available, using displays or a Journey Planner on personal computers
    • Run a shuttle bus to ferry staff to and from the nearest station - opportunities to share services with neighbours
    • Work with bus companies to improve bus routes and shelters. These will involve negotiations with the train or bus companies.
