- Provide secure (covered) bike parking - cycle stands or lockers

- Negotiate staff discount at a local cycle shop
- Set up a Bicycle Users Group (BUG), who can offer support and advice
- Operate a Pool Bike scheme for business/leisure use
- Provide reasonable cycle mileage allowances
- Consider allowing staff to wear 'comfortable clothes' for cycling or walking into the office
- Ensure footpaths are well lit, maintained and signposted
Efficient car use
- Set up a car sharing scheme
- Pool cars or bikes for those who need a car during the day for work
- Parking management - encourage more efficient use of spaces, parking control, reserve a section for car sharers, allocate permits according to need and distance from work, implement parking charges to fund other measures
Flexible Working
- Consider introducing flexitime - benefits to staff and company. This may involve, for example, allowing an earlier start or later finish, and can help to spread the traffic peak.
- Encourage home working where possible, eg once a fortnight
- Use video-conferencing to replace certain meetings
- Consider operating a nine-day fortnight.
Public transport
- Provide interest free loans for season tickets
- Negotiate staff discounts
- Make season tickets available at work
- Work with rail/bus operators to provide extra services where applicable
- Ensure that timetables are readily available, using displays or a Journey Planner on personal computers
- Run a shuttle bus to ferry staff to and from the nearest station - opportunities to share services with neighbours
- Work with bus companies to improve bus routes and shelters. These will involve negotiations with the train or bus companies.
