Cycling in SouthwarkBenefits of cycling
Cycling has been steadily increasing in recent years in London. As more money is spent on cycling infrastructure and initiatives, bikes are becoming an increasingly popular mode of transport. The number of cyclists making journeys across the River Thames has risen by 40% within five years.
Cycling is a healthy, inexpensive and environmentally friendly way of getting about. It is very fuel efficient, fast and journey times are predictable. It is also great fun. Every journey is different and you can explore parts of the city you wouldn’t normally see in a car or from a bus.
But cycling is more than just a great way to get about. Along with swimming it is one of the best all round activities you can do. Cycling is shown to reduce stress, prolong life expectancy and reduce the risk of heart attack.
Cycling in Southwark
There must be a clear potential for cycling to replace short car trips. Southwark is working with Transport for London to complete the LCN+ network of cycle routes by 2009. We are also working with local developers to ensure that all new developments in the borough have secure cycle facilities. To find out where you can securely lock up your bike in Southwark, visit the webmaps page and choose to view cycle parking facilities. You can even see a photo of the parking location.
Southwark Cyclists is a mixed group of people who believe that cycling as transport is undervalued, under used and under supported. It campaigns on all cycling issues in the borough, runs events, carries out research.
