Cross River Tram What is proposed?
The Cross River Tram will run from Peckham to Camden via King’s Cross, Euston and Waterloo. Carrying an estimated 60 million passengers per year, it will ease congestion on the underground and halve journey times into central London from some areas in Southwark.
The benefits for Southwark
The tram will open up access to education, health and employment particularly within local areas which are classified as deprived.
It will encourage local young people to believe that London’s job markets are open to them and transform local people's perceptions of their role in its economy.
When will construction begin?
The £400m transport system has to be approved under a special act of parliament. Work is also underway on route options and the public were consulted from November 2006 to January 2007.
Consultation dates for Southwark residents (all events from midday)
- The National Theatre (South Bank), November 24 and 25
- Elephant and Castle (the shopping centre and Ecopod), December 1 and 2
- Peckham Square, December 15 and 16
If successful, construction could begin in 2010, with the tram in operation by 2016.
How can I find out more about the tram?
Southwark now has its very first Ecopod, to help residents keep up to date with what’s happening on various regeneration projects in Southwark, and in particular, the new Cross River Tram.
The environmentally friendly pod is a converted shipping crate used as anexhibition space. It can be found near the Fusion Leisure Centre at Elephant and Castle.
Although it will only be open for special events, there will be 24 hour video presentations giving local people all the latest news.
The route
The proposed tram route (76 kb) connects areas of huge opportunity in Southwark where large scale regeneration programmes are already underway. During peak periods the trams will depart every four minutes and will interchange with 12 underground stations and four major rail stations.

Elephant and Castle
The tram route will thread through the town centre of Elephant and Castle. This is at the heart of a £1.5bn regeneration programme which will create 5,300 new homes and 75,000 sqm of new shops.
Walworth
The Aylesbury Estate is to be extensively redeveloped and will be linked by the tram into the London transport network. This will unlock the potential of the area and allow its residents to support and benefit from the central London economy.
Peckham
Peckham is also undergoing extensive regeneration but access for local people to the jobs and facilities of central London remains difficult. The tram will bring the benefits of the London economy and its burgeoning job markets closer to residents.
We have joined forces with neighbouring boroughs by launching a major campaign to secure phase two of the East London Line extension.
