Bermondsey Street

People in Tanner Street parkBermondsey Street is one of the most interesting places in Southwark with a rich mix of the old and the new. The street lies to the south of London Bridge in a historic part of the borough. Galleries and bars are dotted between small offices, fashion boutiques, residential units and light industry. An established antiques market in Bermondsey Square is being expanded and a boutique hotel and cinema are also under construction.

Improving Bermondsey Street

There are a number of great parks within easy access of the street and the proximity to London Bridge and Tower Bridge mean that the area is fast becoming a popular destination with a brisk evening trade. There are new residential and mixed use developments planned for vacant sites and the number of people using the street is growing rapidly.

Bermondsey Street is already a busy route for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles. There is a need to improve conditions for those who use it and enhance the local environment. As development continues, more business and residents will be moving into the area, increasing pressure and placing more demand on the limited space.

We are working with local residents and stakeholders to identify issues and conflicts and developing options for improvement. The aim is to create a balanced space that preserves local history and encourages visitors while meeting the needs of new development.
