East London Line
Phase one extension
Phase one (1.05mb) of the East London Line extension is now underway. Services will be extended north to Highbury & Islington and south to New Cross, Crystal Palace and West Croydon in time for the 2012 Olympics. The existing East London Line will be suspended on December 23 2007 and information on replacement services will be available closer to the time. Transport for London is branding the routes the Overground Network, which will be included on the tube map (250kb).
Phase two extension
In phase two of the extension, a 2.5 km link (407 kb)is planned to connect the line south of Surrey Quays overground to Clapham Junction by way of Queens Road Peckham, Peckham Rye, Denmark Hill, Clapham High Street and Wandsworth Road. Completion of phase two would then create an orbital network around central London, fulfilling the Orbirail concept.
It is expected that the extensions will greatly increase the usage of the line. The current figure of 10.4 million passengers per year is expected to increase to 50 million when both phases are finished.
We need your support!
Phase two of the project will have major benefits for many residents. It would provide opportunities for many of Southwark's most socially excluded communities and put South Bermondsey, Peckham and Denmark Hill on London's tube map.
Southwark Council are working in partnership with the East London Line Group to lobby the government to provide funding for the delivery of phase two. We are asking that you show your support by entering your name into the register and help make phase two of the extension a reality.
